How Pass Plus training works
Pass Plus is an advanced driver training course designed to give newly qualified drivers extra skills and experience on the road. The training takes a minimum of 6 hours and is split into six key modules that cover driving in a variety of conditions and environments.
The six pass plus modules
Most modules are delivered as practical driving sessions, although some may be theory-based depending on local conditions. You’ll usually spend at least 4 hours behind the wheel.
Your Pass Plus course will guide you through:

Driving in town
handling busy traffic, junctions, and complex road layouts

All-weather driving
improving your confidence in rain, snow, ice, fog, and bright sunshine

Rural roads
dealing with bends, hills, and narrow country lanes

Night driving
using lights correctly and adjusting to reduced visibility

Dual carriageways
safe overtaking, lane discipline, and higher-speed driving

Motorway driving
planning your journey, safe merging, and dealing with long distances
Why choose Pass Plus with PSM Driving School?
Pass Plus isn’t just about cheaper insurance – it’s about building confidence and becoming a safer driver for life. By covering situations you may not have faced as a learner, such as motorway driving or severe weather conditions, you’ll feel more prepared and capable on the road.
For more information about the scheme, you can contact the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Pass Plus team or speak directly with your PSM Driving School instructor.
Car insurance discounts with pass plus
One of the main benefits of Pass Plus is the potential to save money on your car insurance. Many insurers recognise the value of additional training and may offer a discount to drivers who hold a Pass Plus certificate.
Check with your insurer
not every company offers Pass Plus discounts, and the amount saved can vary.
Time limits
some insurers only accept certificates if you completed the course within a year of passing your practical driving test.
Putting discounts on hold
if you don’t have a car right now, some insurers may let you hold your discount for up to 2 years. Always confirm with the insurance provider first.
No test required
Unlike your driving test, there is no final exam at the end of Pass Plus. Instead, your instructor will assess you continuously during the training. To successfully complete the course, you must demonstrate the required standard across all six modules.
Once you finish, you’ll receive a Pass Plus certificate, which is essential if you want to claim a car insurance discount.
